April 20, 2017 - Thousands of protesters have rallied in the Japanese capital Tokyo against the construction of a new US military base on Okinawa Island.
Protesters held large placards reading “NO”. They marched before gathering to hear speeches from activists. The new U-S military facility will be built as part of a plan aimed at relocating Futenma Airbase to Hennoko, an area in Okinawa’s north. The move has caused continuous opposition from locals and Okinawa’s Governor Takeshi Onaga. The U-S has more than 100-thousand troops on the island where their presence is associated with noise and crime.
